How Does the NECKRA Points Series Work?
I'm glad you asked! The NECKRA Flatwater/Downriver Canoe/Kayak Point Series system has evolved into a great way for paddlers of all ages to be "engaged" in the sport without necessarily being "married" to it.
Disclaimer in case my wife is reading this: Marriage is, of course a wonderful blessing, and I would not trade it for the world!!

There are many different ways to achieve good results in the series, such as participating in as many races as possible (especially smaller races), choosing your partners and boats, and of course good old fashioned speed and technique.

Our handicapping system, similar in concept to golf handicaps, is a great leveler - allowing you to compete in the series against any other racer regardless of gender, "extreme age" & boat type.

Many of the "elite" paddlers compete in each race with the goal of winning their category (or the whole race!). While the these paddlers can also place very high in the series standings, those of us who don't always place in a race still have a chance to compete for series points on a more level playing field.

ALL RACE DISTANCES ARE INCLUDED IN THE SERIES!
There are separate Downriver (whitewater) and Flatwater series, and each of those are separated for Canoes and Kayaks. After applying appropriate handicaps, the boat (containing at least 1 NECKRA member) with the best time in the longest distance offered gets 50 points. The next boat gets 49, the next gets 48, and so on. After the longest distance is calculated, the next distance picks up where we left off. Therefore, if the slowest boat in the longest distance gets 42 points, the fastest boat in the next distance gets 41, then next boat gets 40, and so on. This format is in place of having a separate recreational series, which had low participation in the past

 What Are the Handicaps?
NOTES:
- Multiple handicaps can apply to one boat.
For example, a 72 year-old woman and a 71 year-old man in a flatwater racing boat both get the following handicap: Each Woman in C2 = -2, Each Paddler 70+ = -4, TOTAL HANDICAP = -6 min/hr

- If you are paddling with a Non-NECKRA member, you will still get the proper handicaps provided that we are aware of your partner's age and gender. TALK YOUR PARTNER INTO JOINING NECKRA & we will have that information automatically !
